Gopis come to Yashoda complaining about the deeds of her beloved son Krishna. He is such a thief! they say and advise her to observe fast on Sankastha Chathurthi. Sankastha Chathurthi is a day dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the remover of all obstacles, which falls on the 4th day of the Krishna paksha in every lunar month. Yashoda decides to observe the fast and prays to Lord Ganesha to bless her child with good intelligence and remove his mischief and thus starts the preparations for Sankashta Chathurthi Vritha.

आयकुनि वचन हासता श्रीकृष्णु

Krishna laughs to himself and doesn’t steal anything for the time being. Yashoda is happy that this plan might work out, so with utmost dedication, she immerses herself into the preparations. She makes modak made of jaggery for offering to Lord Ganesha and keeps it in front of the idol. Krishna upon seeing it, asks his mother when would he get to taste it to which Yashoda replies, just wait till the puja is over. Then she goes out to bring charcoal for puja.

Krishna who was standing near the laddus couldn’t resist them. He took a handful of laddus and started stuffing his mouth with it. He swallowed a few and just when he took a bite of the next one Yashoda came there only to see the plate empty!

Krishna says “Listen to me, mother, just when you had gone out , thousands of big fat mice came here. Among them ,was a giant one on whose back a terrifying being was seated who had vermillion applied all over his body. He was holding noose and hook in his hands, do you know who he is???” He asks her. He goes on describing the giant figure thus “His trunk reached up to the floor. I screamed with fear upon seeing such a  figure. And now I am thirsty, could you give me some water, mother ??” He asks and also tells her to catch the laddu thief. “That thief stole Ganapathi ‘s ladu , I am innocent” he proclaims.

Yashoda sternly tells him, “you are the thief! No one else”. She slaps him and asks him to open his mouth  for proof to which Krishna agrees. When he opened his mouth wide, she saw the entire cosmos in it. Then she saw many Lord Ganeshas appear in it and they were all telling one and the same thing “Krishna is Lord Vishnu himself who has come to relieve the earth of its burden. Pray to him!
